Email It In and Zapier
Start a Zap each time Email It In files an attachment: post it to Slack, add a row to a spreadsheet, or send the details to any of the thousands of apps Zapier connects to.
Connecting
- In your Email It In account, open Settings and create an API key in the Zapier section. Copy it: it is shown only once.
- In Zapier, make a Zap that starts with Email It In, trigger New File Filed. Until Email It In is in Zapier's app directory, add it with this invite first.
- Paste the API key when Zapier asks you to connect your account.
- Add your actions and turn the Zap on. It runs within seconds of each file being filed.
Zapier works on every plan. To disconnect, turn the Zap off, or delete the API key in Settings: every Zap using it stops at once.
The New File Filed trigger
One run per filed attachment. The body of the email, when you save it as a file, does not start a run. Each run has these fields:
id: A unique id for the filed file (a string).filename: The name the file was saved under.folder: Where it went: the destination folder, then the path inside it.sizeBytes: The size in bytes.filedAt: When it was filed (ISO 8601, UTC).provider: The storage service: google, onedrive (also SharePoint), dropbox, box or egnyte.subject: The subject of the email it came with.from: The envelope sender of the email. It can be empty for automated mail.to: The Email It In address the email was sent to, with its tag.tag: The tag that chose the folder, from a routing rule, the subject or the address. Null when there is none.
For example:
{
"id": "11599579",
"filename": "Invoice INV-1234.pdf",
"folder": "Accounts/Email It In/tax",
"sizeBytes": 48213,
"filedAt": "2026-11-03T10:15:00.000Z",
"provider": "google",
"subject": "Invoice INV-1234 [tax]",
"from": "billing@example.com",
"to": "sam12gannet+tax@emailitin.com",
"tag": "tax"
}While you set up a Zap, Zapier shows your most recent files as samples. Those come from your delivery log, which does not keep the subject, sender, address or tag, so those fields are empty in the samples only.
API
The Zapier app uses a small REST API at https://www.emailitin.com. You can call it yourself. Send your API key in every request as Authorization: Bearer <key>. A missing or wrong key gets 401. Requests and answers are JSON.
GET /api/v1/zapier/me: Checks the key. Answers { "address", "email" }: your Email It In address and your account email.POST /api/v1/zapier/hooks: Body { "targetUrl" }. Subscribes a URL to new files and answers { "id" }. Only https://hooks.zapier.com/ URLs are accepted, at most 20 per account.DELETE /api/v1/zapier/hooks/{id}: Unsubscribes. Answers 204, or 404 when there is no such subscription.GET /api/v1/zapier/files: The 25 most recently filed files, newest first, in the format below.
When a file is filed, Email It In sends one POST with the file as its JSON body to each subscribed URL. It retries a few times if the URL does not answer with a 2xx status. An answer of 410 Gone removes the subscription.
If you want the full storage provider answer instead, use a web hook. Questions: support@emailitin.com.
