Email files to Dropbox
Your own Email It In address saves attachments into your Dropbox. Forward a receipt, an invoice or a photo, and seconds later it is in Dropbox on every device that syncs.
Paid plans start at $5 a month for 200 files a month, with no email size limit. To try it out, the free plan takes up to 20 files a month, in emails up to 5 MB.
How to set it up
Sign in with Dropbox
Dropbox asks you to allow Email It In. It gets access to its own app folder only, not to the rest of your Dropbox.
Find the app folder
Files land in the Email It In folder inside the Apps folder of your Dropbox. Dropbox makes this folder for Email It In.
Send attachments
Email or forward files to your address. They show up in the app folder under their own names.
How to send an email to Dropbox
Dropbox has no email address of its own unless you pay for a Dropbox plan that includes Email to Dropbox. With Email It In, any Dropbox account gets one, Dropbox Basic included:
- Sign in with Dropbox on Email It In. Your address, like jane42otter@emailitin.com, is ready straight away.
- Send or forward the email to that address, from any mail app, a phone, a scanner or a copier.
- The attachments appear in Dropbox, in Apps › Email It In, within seconds. Add +receipts to the address or [receipts] to the subject to file them in a receipts folder.
Why files go into the Apps folder
Dropbox gives apps like Email It In a folder of their own, inside Apps. Email It In can only see that folder. That keeps the rest of your Dropbox private, and it is also why you cannot point Email It In at another Dropbox folder.
Inside the app folder you can sort freely: routing rules (paid plans) and a folder per email subject create folders there.
Sort by tag
Add a tag to your address, like jane42otter+receipts@emailitin.com, or put [receipts] in the subject. A routing rule (paid plans) then files the attachment in a receipts folder inside the app folder.
Duplicate file names
A second invoice.pdf in the same folder? On a paid plan you pick the rule:
- Keep both: Dropbox adds a number to the new file's name.
- Replace: the new file overwrites the old one.
Questions about Dropbox
Can I send an email to Dropbox on a free Dropbox account?
Yes. Dropbox's own Email to Dropbox is part of paid Dropbox plans, but Email It In works with any Dropbox account. Forward the email to your Email It In address and the attachments land in your Dropbox.
Where are my files in Dropbox?
In Apps › Email It In. Open Dropbox, then the Apps folder, then the Email It In folder. Tag folders and subject folders are inside it.
Can Email It In see my other Dropbox files?
No. Dropbox only gives Email It In access to its own app folder.
How is this different from Dropbox's own Email to Dropbox?
Email to Dropbox puts every attachment into one "Email Attachments" folder. Email It In can sort attachments into folders by tag or subject, take larger emails on a paid plan, and send a notice or call a web hook after each file. Our comparison page has the details.
Is there a size limit?
Paid plans have no size limit; large files go to Dropbox in parts. The free plan takes up to 20 files a month, in emails up to 5 MB.
